Which Power Sander Should You Choose?
On the shelf you’ll find belt sanders, sheet sanders, random orbital sanders and detail sanders. But which is right for your application?
Belt Sanders
- Suitable for initial sanding of large, flat surfaces
- Aggressive sanding behaviour
Detail Sanders
- Suitable for finishing tight spaces and areas of complex detail
- Mild sanding behaviour
Sheet Sanders
- Suitable for most projects, except those requiring a very fine finish
- Suitable for larger surfaces
- Medium sanding behaviour
Random Orbital Sanders
- Suitable for almost all projects, from paint removal to finishing due to the random pattern - except those covering a large surface
- Provides a finer finish than a sheet sander
- Medium/Mild sanding behaviour
Safety Precautions
- Always use impact resistant safety glasses or a face shield, earmuffs or earplugs, protective gloves and a sealed respirator type face mask to avoid inhaling dust particles
- Ensure you do not keep the machine in the one place for any length of time; a ruined project is the likely outcome
- When sanding wood, avoid sanding against the grain
- Look for models which offer a dust bag as standard fitment
