Importance of a quality car stereo head unit
Your car stereo head unit, also known as a car radio, plays a central role in your vehicle's sound system. It provides entertainment through radio stations, CDs, and auxiliary inputs, and enables seamless smartphone connectivity. A high-quality head unit can significantly improve sound quality and user convenience, making every drive more enjoyable. At Supercheap Auto, we offer quality head units with essential features, including Bluetooth capability. Bluetooth allows wireless music streaming from your phone and facilitates hands-free calls to keep you focused on the road. Many models also support voice control, letting you manage music and calls without taking your hands off the wheel.
Seamless iPhone integration with Apple CarPlay head units
If you're an Apple user, consider an Apple CarPlay head unit, which seamlessly integrates with your iPhone. With Apple CarPlay, you can access apps, use navigation with maps, and utilise Siri voice commands through the head unit’s display. You can easily stream your favourite playlists, send and receive messages, and make hands-free calls without taking your eyes off the road. Some models also support wireless Apple CarPlay, allowing you to connect without needing a cable. Don’t forget to keep a USB charger handy to ensure your phone stays charged during your journey, especially if you rely on navigation apps for long trips.
Seamless Android integration with Android Auto head units
For Android users, an Android Auto head unit offers a similar seamless integration experience. With Android Auto, you can connect your smartphone to your car’s stereo system and access apps like Google Maps, Spotify, and WhatsApp through the touchscreen display or voice commands. Google Assistant makes it easy to control music, send messages, and get directions without taking your eyes off the road. Some models support wireless Android Auto, allowing for even greater convenience. Whether you're commuting to work or heading on a road trip, an Android Auto head unit ensures you stay entertained and connected while keeping your hands on the wheel.
Choosing a single DIN head unit vs double DIN head unit
When upgrading your car stereo, it's essential to choose the right head unit size. Single DIN and Double DIN head units refer to the standard sizing for car stereos. A Single DIN head unit is more compact and typically features a basic display with physical buttons, making it an excellent choice for older vehicles or those with limited dashboard space. Double DIN head units, on the other hand, are larger and often come with touchscreen functionality, offering advanced features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and built-in navigation. If you're unsure which size fits your vehicle, check your car’s dashboard specifications or visit your local Supercheap Auto store for advice.

Frequently Asked Questions - Head Units
What is a head unit?
A head unit is the central control system of a car’s audio and entertainment setup. Also known as a car stereo or radio, it manages music playback, radio stations, and connectivity features such as Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Modern head units often include touchscreens, voice control, navigation, and smartphone integration, making them a key component for in-car convenience and entertainment. Whether you need a simple AM/FM receiver or a fully integrated multimedia system, a quality head unit enhances your driving experience by keeping you connected and entertained on the road.
What features should I look for in a car head unit?
When looking for a car head unit, consider features that will enhance your driving experience. Bluetooth connectivity is essential for hands-free calls and wireless music streaming from your phone. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are must-have features for smartphone integration, allowing you to access your favorite apps, navigation, and messages safely. Look for a touchscreen display for easy control and a built-in navigation system to get directions without relying on your phone. Voice control and hands-free calling are also important safety features, letting you keep your focus on the road. Additionally, check for compatibility with HD radio or digital audio broadcasting (DAB) for superior sound quality.
Can a head unit work with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes, many modern head units are designed to support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing you to seamlessly integrate your smartphone into your car’s infotainment system. These features enable you to access apps like navigation, music streaming, calls, and messages directly from the head unit’s screen. Therefore, it’s important to ensure the head unit you choose is compatible with your smartphone’s operating system. If your current head unit doesn’t support these systems, upgrading to one that does will provide a safer and more convenient driving experience, offering hands-free control and reducing distractions while you’re on the road.
What’s the difference between a Single DIN and Double DIN head unit?
A Single DIN head unit is a more compact unit that fits into a smaller space, typically featuring a basic display with physical buttons or a simple screen. This style is often found in older vehicles or in cars with limited dashboard space. In contrast, a Double DIN head unit is larger, usually offering a touchscreen display that can include advanced features such as navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and enhanced audio controls. Double DIN units typically provide more customisation options, such as larger screens for better visibility and easier access to advanced features, making these a popular choice for modern cars.
Can I install a new head unit myself?
Yes, many head units come with detailed installation instructions that allow you to install them yourself, provided you have basic knowledge of your car’s wiring and a few essential tools. You’ll need to remove the old unit, connect the new one to your car’s wiring, and ensure everything is working properly.
