Rust & Metal Paint Product Selector
Supercheap Auto has a range of quality paints & chemical treatments to ensure you can refresh, renew, repaint & protect household, industrial automotive metal surfaces around the home.
The below steps will help you select the right products to complete your next project.
Previously Painted Metal
If the surface you are painting has previously been painted, you will need to follow the following procedure.
To successfully re-coat previously painted metal surfaces it is important to first remove all traces of rust by wire brushing or mechanical sander until sound metal surface is achieved. Once flaking paint and rust have been removed with a wire brush, sand the previously painted surface smooth.
- Clean the surface of dust, grime, grease & oil contamination with the use of SCA Wax & Grease Remover.
- Prime the cleaned metal surface with Metal Cover Heavy Duty Primer.
- Finally, the suitably primed surface can be top coated with Metal Cover Epoxy Enamel Paint in a range of popular colours in either aerosol spray pack or bulk.
- Apply 3 coats allowing drying time between coats. Apply additional coats until coverage is achieved. For maximum adhesion and faster curing apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat.
Non Ferrous Metal Surfaces
If the surface you are painting is a Non-Ferrous surface such as Aluminium or Galvanised Iron, specific care will need to be taken to ensure the surface is suitably primed before applying your top coat.
To successfully re-coat non-ferrous metal surfaces it is important to first remove all traces of corrosion by wire brushing or mechanical sander until sound metal surface is achieved. Once all corrosion has been removed with a wire brush, sand the surface smooth.
- Clean the surface of dust, grime, grease & oil contamination with the use of SCA Wax & Grease Remover.
- Non-ferrous surfaces such as Aluminium and Galvanized Iron should be primed with SCA Etch Primer to ensure appropriate adhesion.
Rusted Steel Surfaces
If the metal surface you are painting has existing rust and corrosion, it is important to chemically treat the rust before applying a fresh coat of paint. Failure to suitably treat the rust may cause your brand new paint job to quickly deteriorate and fail to protect the metal surface from future rust and corrosion.
To successfully re-coat rusted metal surfaces it is important to first remove all traces of corrosion by wire brushing or mechanical sander until sound metal surface is achieved. Once flaking rust has been removed with a wire brush, sand the metal surface smooth.
- Clean the surface of dust, grime, grease & oil contamination with the use of SCA Wax & Grease Remover.
- Treat any surface rust on the surface with SCA Rust Converter or Rust Prime to ensure rust is chemically converted to an ideal base for further coatings.
- Prime the treated metal surface with Metal Cover Heavy Duty Primer.
- Finally, the suitably primed surface can be top coated with Metal Cover Epoxy Enamel Paint in a range of popular colours in either aerosol spray pack or bulk.Apply 3 coats allowing drying time between coats. Apply additional coats until coverage is achieved. For maximum adhesion and faster curing apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat.
New Steel Surfaces
A brand new metal surface can quickly rust and corrode if not suitably painted with quality coatings designed to provide long term protection to inhibit rust and corrosion.
To successfully protect new metal surfaces it is important to first ensure the surface is clean and free from any contaminants before applying protective coatings.
- Clean the surface of dust, grime, grease & oil contamination with the use of SCA Wax & Grease Remover.
- Apply SCA Cold Gal to protect the steel when exposed to severe corrosion environments such as salt & water. The product contains high zinc content in the dry film ensuring maximum corrosion protection.
- Prime surface with Metal Cover Heavy Duty Primer.
