Having a turbo timer fitted to your turbocharged vehicle can be the difference between a long, healthy life of your turbocharger and premature turbo failure. A turbocharger produces an astronomical amount of heat, sometimes upwards of 700°C, and is cooled only by oil and water lines that feed through the turbo when the vehicle is running. Turning the vehicle off immediately after driving also turns off these cooling systems which protect the turbo shaft and bearings; potentially leading to thermal distortion or bearing failure. The LED Turbo Timer allows the vehicle to stay running at idle for a pre-programmed amount of time once the user has removed the key from the ignition; this allows the user to leave the vehicle while it is left to cool for up to nine and a half minutes. Being a component that allows the fuel pump to continue running once ignition has been cut, this turbo timer must be only installed by a professional electrician and is suited for track cars only.
There are rules and regulations that cover the installation of aftermarket components in Australian road vehicles. As these rules differ from state to state, please check with your local transport authority for further information.
